The Mission: To research, record and preserve the personal histories of the young people from here in the Fox Valley, the Midwest, who played a vital role in merging land speed racing and hot rodding creating modern drag racing. And simultaneously noting the positive benefits that accrued to the lives and avocations of these young people by the very nature of their activities and labors at the track. Jay Thompson

"Writing a book is not as tough as it is to haul 35 people around the country and sweat like a horse five nights a week." - Bette Midler

Jim "Woody" Woodrow

Known for his high jumping flag starter work, I have come to rely on "Woody" for his incredible memory, not only of people and events but of the manufacturing history of Aurora when it was an industrial giant.

In his spare time he is a rabid Bears fan and has traveled widely to root for his team.

James W. Woodrow

"Woody"
September 23, 1936 - November 3, 2007
Woody was born and raised in Montgomery, IL. He graduated from West Aurora High in 1953 and later served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. He worked at Western Electric for 30 years until his retirement. He was a volunteer Montgomery Fireman and was a life member of the Montgomery VFW. Woody was a familiar figure at the Oswego Drag Strip and was the original Starter always doing his signature "Leap in the Air" before bringing the flag down. Because of his dedication to the strip Woody is being honored with a street to be named after him in the new sub-division now being built on the old drag strip grounds. He was very active in the S.A. softball field operating the brat stand and singing "Take me out to the ballgame" during the 5th inning stretch. He also helped prepare the field every spring and went with the team to Japan as the official photographer. Being a season ticket holder for years, Woody loved his Chicago Bears, even going to the 1986 Super Bowl. Whenever he could, he would travel to where the Bears were playing, including London. On the way to the games there was not one Hooters Woody could pass up. To Woody the Bears and Hooters just seemed to go together, He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary (Watson) Woodrow; and his sister, Marylou Woodrow.

He is survived by his brother, Bob (Lois) Woodrow; two nieces and a nephew; plus two very special friends, Nyla Hartman and Jim "Doc" Sandrolini.

Funeral will be on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at 10:00 AM at Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 S. Broadway Ave., Montgomery, IL with Interment following at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Family will be receiving guests from 4:00-8:00 pm on Monday, November 5, 2007 at the Memorial Home. Memorial Contributions may be made in his name to the Montgomery VFW post, 7452 121 N. River, Montgomery, IL 60538.
