The Era of the Oswego Dragway

The Official Web Site & Headquarters for the on-going Documentary Project: The Era of the Oswego Dragway 1955-1979

There is nothing more practical than a good theory. - Kirchhoff "The El Mirage Story"

"I was having a nightmare . . . and then I realized I was just in the music business." -  Paul on David Letterman Show

"revolutions never go backwards" proverb

"I began revolution with 82 men. If I had to do it again, I do it with 10 or 15 and absolute faith. It does not matter how small you are if you have faith and plan of action." - Fidel Castro

The Hunnert Car Pileup is a Traditional Hot Rod and Custom show. That means that the cars that are admitted into the show are traditional 40’s, 50's, and early 60’s style hot rods and customs.

James Dean was killed in his race car in September of 1955 the same month and year the Oswego Dragway started on a dirt track. I am not saying this because I believe there is any direct connection but it highlights the fact that cars and speed and highways were on the minds of of young people across the US at the time. In fact 1956 was the year that the Interstate Highway Act was passed and signed into law. And that was the same year that the Oswego Dragway was asphalted, turned around into the opposite direction away from Highway 34 and to the north.

1940 Fords

Many racers had car clubs and 40' Fords in common! Here in 1956 is Darold Cutsinger's 1940 Ford coupe in front of the National Hot Rod Association's Drag (Safety) Safari trailer for the 1st Regional Finals in the Midwest held at the Oswego Dragway.

1956 Oswego left, 2006 Hunnert Car Pile-up right and below the 2006 PrairieFest Car Show

"Entry Criteria

The Hunnert Car Pileup is a Traditional Hot Rod and Custom show. That means that the cars that are admitted into the show are traditional 40’s, 50's, and early 60’s style hot rods and customs. If you’re not sure what that means, you need to ask someone before planning a trip to the show. Our criteria inspection is thorough and we do turn cars away. One good way to judge if you car may meet the criteria is to look at the pics from the last four years.

We are not trying to be elitist or snobby, nor are we trying to piss anyone off or say that there car is not "cool" or "good". The Hunnert Car Pileup is a show for a specific set of vehicles and style of craftsmanship. For those of you who are grumbling about your car being too new, or otherwise not meeting our criteria, you wouldn't want a sport tuner Honda Civic at your model T show... would you? The Hunnert Car Pileup was built on the the spirit of “Tradition,” so we intend to keep it that way. Its the reason the show was started, and the reason it continues.

There is plenty of parking in front of the gate for the cars that don't quite meet the criteria. There is quite a show on both sides of the gate! If your car, bike or scooter gets get turned away at the door, don't take it personally. We still want you to come and have a good time with us."

  "The Criteria

We reserve the right to refuse entry to any vehicle that we feel does not fit the spirit of the show. Absolutely no stuffed animals or cry baby dolls!

In order to get everyone in and parked quickly, there will be no reserved parking. If your club wants to park together, you must arrive together.
