Oswego: Also you might notice Norb Locke standing there with a trophy and plaque or two.

The Era of the Oswego Dragway

The Mission: To research, record and preserve the personal histories of the young people from here in the Fox Valley, the Midwest, who played a vital role in merging land speed racing and hot rodding creating modern drag racing. And simultaneously noting the positive benefits that accrued to the lives and avocations of these young people by the very nature of their activities and labors at the track. Jay Thompson

"America is all about speed. Hot, nasty, bad-ass speed."

-Eleanor Roosevelt, 1936 (?)

Norb Locke

What? He just built another dragster?

After all these years?

1959    1930 Ford roadster running in X/M. Running a 213 cu. Model B engine with dual carbs, milled head and straight pipe exhaust.  Best run 76.96 mph and 18.54 et.

1960     1948 Ford coupe running in F/G. Running a 239 cu. Ford flathead with high-compression heads, 4 carbs and an Isky Cam. Best runs 76.27 mph and 17.22 et.

1961    A home made dragster. Running in D/D. Running a 284 cu. flathead with 4 carbs. Best runs 100 mph and 16.63 et.

Oswego: There were few if any trees near the track.

1962    The same car as above but adding a supercharger and fuel injection. Best runs 100 mph and 13.63 et.

1963-1965    A twin engine flathead dragster. Chassis by Al's Speed Shop with 2 284 cu. Ford flathead motors both with  superchargers and fuel injection. We set two Standard 1320 records with this car, both in the AA/GFHD. Speed at 150.00 with ET at 10.27. After switching to fuel during the end of the 1964 season we were able to make runs of 176.00 mph with an ET of 9.04. We were unable to back up these runs for a record due to a driveline explosion and the scrapping of the car.

1966    I started to build a new 115" Logghe chassis dragster but the money ran out. After getting married in August of '65 and a child due in September of 66 the car got sold.

Notes: With the twin engine car I was chosen to be in the Fourth Annual Top Twenty meet at Oswego on October 20, 1963.

I now have restored a 1960 Chassis Research dragster for static fire-ups and car shows. The car made it's first completed appearance at the NHRR in Bowling Green, Kentucky on June 15, 2006.

On August 8, 2006 I received word that my old 1966 Logghe chassis car ran at Union Grove, Wisconsin for three years. I have been trying to locate this car for the last four years and it's looking like I am getting closer to finding it.

Oswego: Looking South South West you can see the upper half of Wally Smith's home & outbuildings.

The Smith property is actually across the street, Highway 34, from the strip.
